Warong Manggis, Meru: Chilling Under the Trees with RM4.50 Butter Coffee

Not every hangout spot needs air-conditioning. At Warong Manggis, Kampung Budiman, in the Meru-Kapar area, tables are set outdoors in the shade of the trees, and the evening or night breeze is enough to make people linger. The atmosphere is calm, far from the noise of the main road, perfect for catching up with friends or family.

The menu is fairly wide, from heavy meals to drinks. We started with the nasi goreng manggis at RM10. It smells fragrant and the portion is enough to keep you going until night. Then came the roti bakar with kacang pul (RM11.50): crispy toast dipped in thick, spiced fava bean stew, a pairing more often found at Middle Eastern-themed shops than at a kampung warung.

For snacks, the RM6.50 chicken popcorn is fried till golden, crispy outside and still tender inside. It's easy to share while waiting for the other dishes.

The drinks section caught our attention the most. The kopi manggis, the shop's namesake drink, has a strong coffee taste with its own blend of flavours. The kopi butter at RM4.50 is richer and more fragrant thanks to the mix of coffee and butter, while the RM5 kopi ais brew is smoother and more refreshing for those who don't want it too strong.

Warong Manggis is on Jalan Hamzah, Kampung Budiman, Kapar. During our visit, the warung was open daily from 4pm to 1am, and on weekends it opens as early as 7am for breakfast. What we paid averaged under RM12 a plate, so it's great for regular hangouts without straining your wallet.
