Warong Mama Kitchen, Telok Panglima Garang: A Breakfast with Plenty of Choice

The usual problem at breakfast is that everyone in the family wants something different. At Warong Mama Kitchen, Jalan Sekolah, Kampung Batu 9 Kebun Baru, Telok Panglima Garang, that problem is solved because the list of options is long. We came to try the dishes customers mention most, and every plate that arrived at our table turned out to have something special about it. The shop is simple and relaxed, perfect for a family breakfast on the weekend.

First up, the lontong sotong. The lontong (rice cakes in vegetable coconut gravy) has a rich, creamy gravy, and the squid sambal brings a nice balance of sweet and spicy. The mee kari spesial comes with a thick, well-spiced gravy, plus toppings and a portion that kept us full until lunch.

Nasi lemak fans can choose the nasi lemak udang petai. The prawns are big and fresh, eaten with sambal petai. The dish we least expected to find at a breakfast shop is the mantou kari kambing: soft, fluffy mantou buns dipped in thick mutton curry.

For those who want something soupy, the soto nasi bergedil offers a richly spiced soto broth with soft bergedil (potato patties). Special drinks include teh leleh and Nestum.

Two other things caught our attention. The shop provides free food especially for expectant mothers, and they sell their own sambal under the name Sambal by Mama Kitchen, which you can take home after breakfast. During our visit, the sambal was on discount in conjunction with Merdeka month, so it's worth asking about the latest promotions.
