Warong Atokk Nenek, Sri Andalas: Johor Food in Klang

The moment we stepped into Warong Atokk Nenek in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, it reminded us of our grandparents' house. The café, which has been running for over five years, blends a hometown kampung concept with English countryside style, decorated with old lamps, polaroid photos and vintage items, including a London-style red phone booth outside.

The menu centres on Johor cooking. We started with the nasi briyani gam ayam (Johor-style chicken biryani), which comes in a generous portion, with tender chicken and a gravy that goes well with it. The laksa Johor here uses spaghetti in a thick fish gravy, and the texture is really different from regular laksa.

The mee bandung Muar daging (with beef) comes with so much beef that the egg is almost hidden; once mixed, the broth becomes creamier. The must-try is the kacang pool (spiced bean stew), thick and spiced, for dipping toast into.

For snacks, there's cucur bawang (onion fritters) and mee siput. Cold iced drinks help cool you down, while thick kopi O is best for dunking biscuits at tea time. Besides Johor dishes, the warung also serves Western food like English breakfast, spaghetti and mac and cheese, as well as pastries.

Most plates cost around RM10 to RM20 with generous portions, making it a great spot for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea with the family. For Johoreans living in the Klang Valley, it's also an easy place to get a taste of home.
