The Hooks, Sijangkang: British-Style Fish & Chips, Pick Your Own Fish

Not many would expect the Sijangkang area in Telok Panglima Garang to be home to a serious fish and chips shop. The Hooks Fish N' Chips by NXA is on Jalan Sempadan Batu 7, Kampung Sijangkang, in a neat building that looks premium. The space is roomy, so it suits big families as well as groups of friends looking to hang out after work.

The concept is British-style fish and chips, but with a twist: customers can choose the type of fish. There are three main options: dory, the softest; snapper, with firmer flesh; and butterfish, the most premium choice here. The fish is only fried after you order, so the batter reaches your table crispy and hot.

Butterfish is our favourite. The flesh is thick, flakes easily when pulled apart and has a springy texture almost like chicken. Eaten with fries and house-made tartar sauce, it's well balanced and not oily. The snapper is fresh too, while the dory is great for little kids since its flesh is the softest.

Besides the fish, the mac and cheese here is worth trying; the cheese is so thick you can pull it. For those who still want rice, there's nasi salted egg buttermilk chicken, which is rich and slightly salty.

The drinks are more than just an add-on. Coffee is served with latte art, and there's also a chocolate chip frappe and a vanilla strawberry drink for non-coffee drinkers. For the quality of fish on offer, we reckon the prices are still worth it.
