Teh Halia Pak Sani, Klang: Legendary Ginger Tea in an Old-House Setting

A nostalgic café on Jalan Kota Raja, Klang, famous for ginger tea brewed daily in a giant pot and served alongside mee rebus, toast with kampung eggs and over 30 other dishes.

Mention ginger tea in Klang and Teh Halia Pak Sani is bound to come up. The café sits on Jalan Kota Raja in Klang and leans fully into a classic look, with décor that recalls an old family home. It is an easy pick for a relaxed breakfast or afternoon tea with the family.

The star is, of course, the teh halia (ginger tea). It is brewed every day in a huge pot, then pulled until smooth. The ginger is bold and warming, and it soothes the throat straight away. Coffee lovers who want a little heat can go for kopi halia (ginger coffee), and if you prefer something brothy, try the Maggi sup halia (instant noodles in ginger soup).

On the food side, mee rebus (noodles in a thick sweet potato gravy) is a must, sweet, rich and mildly spicy. The kuetiau goreng (fried flat rice noodles) was another favourite of ours. For a classic breakfast, order the toast and kampung egg set; dipping toast into soft-boiled village eggs is hard to beat.

For something sweet, there is a soft fruit cake packed with fruit, plus kacang putih Pak Sani (Indian-style roasted nut and bean snacks). With more than 30 items on the menu, it pays to come with a group and share.

Tips

  • Order the hot ginger tea for the strongest ginger kick.
  • Come in a group so you can sample more of the 30-plus menu items.
  • Dip your toast into the kampung eggs for an old-school breakfast.
  • Jalan Kota Raja is in central Klang, so allow time to find parking.
