Taman Negara Johor Endau-Rompin (Peta): Ancient Rainforest in Mersing

Water tubing on Sungai Endau, treks to Air Terjun Upeh Guling and Tasik Biru, and Orang Asli Jakun culture at the Peta entrance.

Taman Negara Johor Endau-Rompin (Peta)

Many people still don't know about Taman Negara Johor Endau-Rompin. Gazetted in 1993, this 48,905-hectare park is the largest protected area in the southern Peninsula, and its forest is estimated to be around 248 million years old. It straddles the Johor and Pahang border, and is home to Malayan tigers, elephants and tapirs.

We entered through the Peta entrance in Mersing district, about 53 km from Kahang town. The first activity was water tubing, floating on a tube down the current of Sungai Endau for around 2 km, surrounded by well-preserved forest.

Next we took a boat along the river before starting the trek to Air Terjun Upeh Guling, which takes a while as it's about 5 km away. This tiered waterfall flows over rocks and forms natural pools. From midway along the trail, there's a turn-off to Tasik Biru, a clear, bluish lake you can take a dip in.

At Kampung Peta, the Orang Asli Jakun community shares their way of life. We got to watch a handicraft demonstration, try the blowpipe and learn to build traditional animal traps. The park's gallery displays information on the flora, fauna and facilities available.

Facilities include chalets, dorms, a campsite at Kuala Jasin, a dining area and the Nature Education and Research Centre. 2-day 1-night and 3-day 2-night packages are offered, covering accommodation, meals, permits, guides and activities. Licensed nature guides are compulsory for all treks, so booking early is highly recommended.

Tips

  • Book your package early, especially for weekends and school holidays; contact the Peta office at 013-744 0951.
  • June to August is best, as the trails are dry and there are fewer leeches; the Peta entrance may close during monsoon floods.
  • Bring leech socks, shoes with good grip, a waterproof bag and at least 1 litre of water.
  • Bring cash, as there are no ATMs in the park area.
