Kodai Kueh, Jalan Kebun: Cara Berlauk, Popia Big Mac and Kunafa

The name is a play on the word 'kedai' (shop), and true enough, Kodai Kueh on Jalan Ikhsan, Kampung Jalan Kebun, Seksyen 30, Shah Alam works like a one-stop kuih shop. From traditional kuih and modern desserts to rice dishes, it's all under one roof. It's great for lunch or afternoon tea, and the moment we stepped in, we were spoilt for choice.

The star here is the cara berlauk (savoury mini pancakes), cooked fresh and hot. The filling is minced meat, packed in generously, not just a token smear. For those with a sweet tooth, their cara manis is crispy outside but still soft inside, and tastes best while still warm.

Two more we recommend are the popia Big Mac and the kuih keria (sweet potato doughnuts). The popia Big Mac is stuffed full and even more appetising dipped in cheese sauce. The keria is soft inside with an even coating of crystallised sugar. The popia sira is crispy with a sweet and slightly spicy taste, while the kuih bakar pandan is soft and fluffy.

For something more filling, the shop offers nasi beriani among other options. Dessert fans can go for kunafa, tiramisu, cheese lava cake and plenty more, so much so that first-timers might find it hard to decide.

Most items are already packed, so you can just grab and take them home. During our visit, Kodai Kueh was open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 6.30pm and closed on Mondays. It's located near Aboy Cafe on the same street.
