A 3-Day, 2-Night Kuala Terengganu Itinerary: 10 Must-Visit Stops

Batik canting in Telaga Daing, sunset on the drawbridge, a boat ride along Sungai Terengganu and a table full of kuih at Gong Kapas: our three-day trip outline for Terengganu's state capital.

A 3-Day, 2-Night Kuala Terengganu Itinerary

Kuala Terengganu is a friendly city for a short trip. Most of the attractions are within a few kilometres of the Sungai Terengganu river mouth, so three days and two nights is enough if you plan your schedule by area. Here are the ten places we covered.

Day one started at Lambosari, Kampung Telaga Daing, an interactive cultural centre under the Koperasi Homestay Teluk Ketapang that has been running since 2019. We tried batik canting and colouring, tasted kuih cara berlauk and tepung bunga, and took photos in traditional attire. In the evening, we went to the Jambatan Angkat Kuala Terengganu (Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge), fully opened in August 2019 and known as the first drawbridge in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The view is prettiest at sunset, before its lights come on. At night, we took a leisurely stroll through Kampung Cina (Chinatown), full of coffee shops and photo spots.

Day two was more about crafts and food. At Kraftangan Malaysia Cawangan Terengganu, Chendering, we watched molten brass being shaped, tried clay batik and observed songket weaving before stopping at the sales gallery. Then it was on to Pasar Payang, which has operated in a new building since August 2024, for kuih, kerepek (chips) and hot keropok lekor. In the afternoon, we took a river cruise boat from Taman Tamadun Islam for about 45 minutes, passing the Masjid Kristal (Crystal Mosque), the drawbridge and Pulau Duyung.

Another unique stop is Teratak Dalam Muzium, a café within the grounds of Muzium Negeri Terengganu, Losong. We were welcomed with an Ulek Mayang performance before enjoying coffee and traditional kuih amid a collection of antiques.

For our stay, we chose Terengganu Equestrian Resort on Jalan Sultan Mahmud, an equestrian resort opened in 2007 with a riding arena, a sports complex with a swimming pool and bowling, and a view of the polo field at breakfast.

The last day was all about eating. Restoran Singgang Budu near Mayang Mall serves nasi campur with all sorts of kampung dishes, and the singgang (fish in a light turmeric broth) and budu (fermented anchovy sauce) are a must. To wrap up, Gerai Kuih Gong Kapas has more than 100 kinds of traditional and modern kuih, complete with wakaf (open huts) to sit and eat in.

Tips

  • Plan your schedule by area: Lambosari and Kampung Cina are on the town side, while Chendering and the equestrian resort are to the south.
  • Head to the drawbridge around 6.30pm to catch the sunset and the night lights in one go.
  • Restoran Singgang Budu opens around 10am to 5pm and gets packed at lunchtime; park at Mayang Mall if it's full.
  • Check the river cruise schedule before going, as operations depend on the weather and the day.
