Mosque-Side Stalls, Seksyen 18 Shah Alam: The After-Maghrib Hangout

A row of stalls beside a mosque in Seksyen 18, Shah Alam is a favourite after-maghrib hangout, serving prawn char kway teow, lamb grill, sizzling yee mee and spiced chicken nasi lemak at wallet-friendly prices.

Just finished maghrib prayers and feeling peckish? In Seksyen 18, Shah Alam, a row of stalls right beside a mosque has become an evening hangout for locals. Better still, the stalls sit next to a car wash, so you can eat while waiting for your car to be cleaned.

We started with prawn char kway teow. It is well seasoned with fresh prawns, best eaten piping hot. Next came a lamb grill from the western stall, tender and juicy, dipped in black pepper sauce.

Sizzling fans should try the sizzling yee mee. The gravy is thick and it comes loaded, great value. We finished with nasi lemak ayam berempah (coconut rice with spiced fried chicken), well spiced with crispy chicken and a sweet-spicy sambal. There is also a tasty but fairly fiery nasi lemak sambal paru (with beef lung sambal), plus sides such as sambal sotong (squid sambal) and anchovies with petai.

There are plenty of other options like burgers and soups, so everyone can eat what they fancy. Prices are wallet-friendly and parking is available, making it a good spot for family and friends.

Tips

  • Come after maghrib, when the stalls are at their liveliest.
  • Drop your car at the car wash next door and eat while you wait.
  • The sambal paru nasi lemak is fairly spicy; go for the spiced chicken if you prefer milder.
  • Come as a group and order from several stalls to share.
