Eryna's Sup Darat, Simpang Pulai: Fat-Free Soups by the Toll

About two minutes from the Simpang Pulai toll, Eryna's Sup Darat serves around 15 kinds of soup with the fat skimmed off daily, plus grilled fish, grilled squid and freshwater prawns.

Heading to Ipoh? Stop by Eryna's Sup Darat in Simpang Pulai, about two minutes from the toll plaza. Exit the Simpang Pulai toll, turn right and the restaurant is on your left. It is set up like a rest stop, with a big car park, surau (prayer room), toilets and a VIP room that seats more than 50 people.

So what makes sup darat special? According to the team, no salt, sugar or seasoning goes in during cooking, it is added only when serving. The oil and fat are also skimmed off every day, so the soups are not greasy. There are around 15 types, including sup campur (mixed soup), sup tulang bakar (grilled bone soup), tripe soup and beef soup, served with noodles, rice vermicelli or Maggi.

Not in the mood for soup? There is plenty of seafood, such as grilled fish, grilled squid and freshwater prawns. We loved the ikan siakap sambal (sea bass in chilli sambal), with a genuinely good sambal, and the stuffed grilled squid filled with tofu and egg. There is also nasi kao mok with a big piece of chicken, and pulut mangga (mango sticky rice) for dessert.

Besides Simpang Pulai, Eryna's Sup Darat also has branches in Tapah and Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.
