Pak Hasan's Bubur Lambuk, Kampung Baru: A Mosque Recipe Since 1983

Abu Bakar Muhammad, better known as Pak Hasan, learned to cook bubur lambuk at the Kampung Baru mosque in 1983 and still keeps the original recipe, cooking dozens of pots a day throughout Ramadan.

Mention Ramadan in Kuala Lumpur and Kampung Baru bubur lambuk (spiced rice porridge with meat) comes straight to mind. We chatted with Pak Hasan, the nickname of Abu Bakar bin Muhammad. He started cooking bubur lambuk at the Kampung Baru mosque in 1983, for a month every Ramadan, before taking that experience to his own shop.

He began with a single pot and added more year after year. These days he usually cooks around 25 pots, and on some days it has reached 50. Each pot takes at least two hours, and work starts before dawn prayers.

Pak Hasan insists his recipe is the Kampung Baru mosque recipe, unchanged to this day. The secret to consistency is simple: only one head cook guards the flavour. If three people take charge, he says, you get three different tastes, because each measures salt and cooks differently.

According to Malay Mail, Pak Hasan's stall is on Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kampung Baru. The porridge is sold only during Ramadan, and the 2026 season is over, so you will have to wait for next Ramadan to try it.
