7 Places to Visit in Klang: From Pulau Ketam to Tugu Keris

A quick guide to seven must-visit stops in the royal town of Klang, covering a fishing island, a royal gallery, two historic mosques, Pasar Jawa, Jambatan Kota and Tugu Keris.

What is there to do in Klang? Let us take you to seven highlights. First, Pulau Ketam (Crab Island), named after the crabs that sustain its community. The boat ride takes about half an hour, and once there you can rent an electric scooter to get around.

Second, the Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz, a heritage building that once served as a British-era land office and now displays the personal and official collection of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the eighth Sultan of Selangor. Third, the Masjid Jamek Cina Muslim Klang (Chinese Muslim Mosque), inspired by the Great Mosque of Xi'an in China, with clear Chinese architectural touches and room for around 1,000 worshippers. Fourth, the Masjid Diraja Sultan Suleiman, a royal mosque more than 90 years old that blends Moorish and classic Islamic styles.

Fifth, Pasar Jawa, a market selling crisps, festive cookies, Muslim clothing and accessories for umrah and haj, and buzzing before Hari Raya. Nearby is Jambatan Kota, a double-deck bridge that, according to the video, was the first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, completed in 1957. The upper deck carries vehicles and the lower deck pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles, with a mini bazaar every Saturday.

The final stop is Tugu Keris, an iconic monument of royal Klang and a favourite photo spot. You can cover all seven in a day if you start early.

Tips

  • Start early with the boat to Pulau Ketam, then return to explore town.
  • Visit Jambatan Kota on a Saturday for the mini bazaar.
  • Dress modestly if you plan to enter the mosques.
  • Pasar Jawa is busiest before Hari Raya, so go in the morning.
