7 Legendary Places to Eat in Port Klang

From three-generation nasi kandar on Jalan Kem to a rojak stall going for nearly seven decades on Jalan Acheh, these are seven old shops that are still favourites with Port Klang folks.

7 Legendary Places to Eat in Port Klang

Port Klang isn't just a port. Around Kawasan 13, near the bus station and Jalan Kem, there are eateries that have been running since our grandparents' time. We spent a day trying seven of them, and most can be reached on foot.

First up, Restoran Langkapuri on Jalan Kem. This nasi kandar shop was opened in the 1960s by Syed Abdul Razak Ahmad Kabir and is now run by his grandchildren. The big fried chicken, mutton curry and squid curry are among the favourites, and the shop gets very busy during the fasting month. Not far away is Usmanis Biryani & Sup on Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, a roadside shop known for 17 years for its mee goreng sotong (fried noodles with squid). Its biryani is only available on Fridays.

Then there's Cathay Hailam Kopitiam at No. 23 Jalan Kem. The building was put up in 1941 as a hotel before becoming a Hainanese coffee shop, and you can still feel its old-school charm. The menu is pork-free; try the Hainanese chicken chop with tomato gravy or the mee Hailam. Next is Vita Tauhu Bakar, which has been selling from a lorry for over 22 years, with peanut sauce poured on without holding back.

We also stopped by the MPK food court near the Port Klang bus station. It looks ordinary, but several legendary stalls operate here. Among them are SS Mee Jawa, around since 1997, and Nasi Ayam Abang Leman on Jalan Acheh, which offers Port Klang-style chicken rice at low prices and in big portions. Come early, as the queue gets long at lunchtime.

Last, and the oldest, is Rojak Peer Mohamed on Jalan Acheh, Kawasan 13. This rojak stall has been running for over 68 years without changing much and is now carried on by the founder's son and son-in-law, making it one of the old-timers' haunts that's still going strong.
