7 Must-Visit Makan Spots in Langkawi

Langkawi isn't just about beaches and duty-free shopping. After a few days on the island, we gathered seven places to eat that cover a range of tastes, from seaside meals to the villagers' afternoon kuih.

Hidden Treasure is perfect for a meal while waiting for the sunset. The sea breeze is lovely, the menu is wide with a focus on western dishes, and there's seating upstairs and downstairs. For crab, head to Crab Farm Langkawi on Jalan Teluk Yu, Kampung Kelubi. The crabs are cooked in a range of kampung styles, there's even horseshoe crab, and you eat right beside the crab ponds. According to its listing, it's open from noon to 8pm and closed every Thursday.

For something out of the ordinary, Langkawi Oyster Farm in the Kubang Badak area farms its own oysters and serves them fresh at a floating restaurant. The place can only be reached by boat and must be booked in advance. The oysters we tasted weren't fishy at all.

Orkid Ria Seafood on Jalan Pantai Tengah is the pick for a more comfortable dinner. The restaurant is neat and spacious, the seafood is chosen fresh, and frequently mentioned dishes include chilli crab and butter tiger prawns. It's open from 1pm to 11pm.

On the way to Air Terjun Durian Perangin, stop by Pak Teh Bihun Sup at the Durian Perangin junction, Kampung Sungai Itau. Choose bihun, kuey teow or noodles in hot soup, add their spicy sambal, and enjoy it right away. It's reasonably priced and makes a great light meal after a dip at the waterfall.

For lunch, Restoran Kak Yan Nasi Campur on Jalan Ulu Melaka serves more than 30 kampung dishes daily and is always packed with locals. The dishes run out fast, so come early. Finally, Kak Yan Peneram on Jalan Kuala Teriang kneads and fries kuih peneram by hand in front of customers. This rice flour and brown sugar kuih is best eaten hot, perfect for afternoon tea.

Tips

  • Rent a car, as these places are spread out from Pantai Tengah to Durian Perangin.
  • Book Langkawi Oyster Farm early, as it can only be reached by boat.
  • Get to Kak Yan Nasi Campur before 12.30pm before the popular dishes run out; bring cash.
