From kampung-style breakfast in Seksyen 14 to Kelantanese gulai kawah on Jalan Kebun, these are the six places to eat we recommend for your first time in Shah Alam.

6 Must-Try Places to Eat on Your First Trip to Shah Alam

Shah Alam is often known as an administrative city, but its food options are very wide, from classic warungs to modern cafés. Here are six places we tried ourselves that are perfect for first-timers.

Start your day at Warong Tiga Lima, a nostalgia-themed warung with classic Malay music and old kampung-style decor. The warung now operates at a new location in Galeria SA Sentral, Seksyen 14, which is more spacious and comfortable. We tried the roti telur goyang, lontong mak lodeh and sate. It's open from 8am to 10pm and closed on Monday.

For lunch with a view, there's a Malay restaurant by Tasik Shah Alam with seating facing the water. Sambal udang, daging salai and sagu gula Melaka are among the dishes we recommend. For café lovers, Janecof in Setia Alam is great for hanging out into the night with friends, with drinks like pistachio chocolate and Son of Sumatra.

In Bukit Jelutong, One Serambi Cafe at D'Bayu Commercial Centre serves a western menu in a vintage-themed space. The café is closed on Monday and opens from 9.30am to midnight on other days. We tried the berries pavlova and snow ice for dessert, while the lamb shank is one of the best-known dishes here.

Want a fine dining feel without luxury restaurant prices? Rico's Pizza Cafe on Jalan Besar, Sungai Buloh offers wagyu tomahawk at a price we felt was lower than elsewhere, plus sup tulang and king crab. Finally, fans of Kelantanese cooking must head to Nasi Ulam Ikan Bakar Jalan Kebun in Seksyen 30. The most sought-after dish here is gulai kawah (a rich curry cooked in a giant wok).

Note: we haven't been able to officially confirm the name of the lakeside restaurant, so check Google Maps before heading there.

Tips

  • Visit Warong Tiga Lima on a weekday to avoid the crowds, and remember it's closed every Monday.
  • One Serambi Cafe is also closed on Monday, and on Friday it takes a break between 1 and 3pm.
  • Plan your route by area: Seksyen 14 and Tasik Shah Alam in the morning, Bukit Jelutong and Setia Alam in the afternoon.
  • Rico's in Sungai Buloh and Jalan Kebun in Seksyen 30 are at opposite ends, so pick one for dinner.
